Gemma’s journey to diagnosis
This time last year, Gemma fell ill. A positive covid test meant we weren’t worried…although I noticed she was very pale, which I have never encountered as a mum of three. Two weeks went by, she had developed a deep cough. At this point I took her to the GP and she was diagnosed with bronchitis, a secondary illness to Covid. She had some steroids which helped the cough…we thought she was on the mend. A week later, her first soccer game of the season. My heart sunk as she could barely walk across the field, let alone run!! At this point i felt sick in my stomach as i knew something was very wrong. We went home, she said her bones hurt 😢. Nick and I looked at each other and agreed it was hospital time.We are walking for kids with cancer
For the past yr, our precious Gemma has been bravely fighting leukemia. We are walking for kids with cancer on Sunday 23 March 2025 for Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation (SCHF). Funds raised from Walk for Kids with Cancer will go directly to the frontline of children’s healthcare across the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, including the Kids Cancer Centre at Randwick and the Cancer Centre for Children at Westmead.
Together we can help find answers to rare diseases like childhood cancer, faster ways to diagnose, support clinical trials, help build clinical and patient family-centered spaces in hospitals, and create positive patient experiences for kids and their families.
No child should ever go through cancer but those who do deserve our all.
